Frequently Asked Questions

Check out the most frequently asked questions about Republic Bjj.

Is it too late for me to start learning BJJ?

No! It is never too late to start learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While many of our students are in their 20s and 30s (and 40s), we also have members ranging from 18 all the way up to 70. In fact, lots of people start their BJJ journey in their 40s and 50s and find it to be an incredible way to stay active, build confidence, and challenge themselves. Classes are structured so that everyone trains at their own pace, making BJJ accessible no matter your age or starting point.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes! New students are welcome to try a free class before signing up.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Safety is our top priority. We teach proper techniques, encourage controlled training, and always emphasize tapping early to avoid injuries.

What should I wear to my first class?

A t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings without zippers or pockets are fine. If you already have a gi, bring it — but it’s not required for your trial class.

What are the hygiene rules at the gym?

  • Always wear a clean gi or training gear.

  • Practice good personal hygiene — wear deodorant and brush your teeth before class.

  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed to avoid scratches.

  • No shoes on the mats — always wear sandals or flip-flops off the mats.

  • Cover any cuts, scrapes, or skin conditions before training.

  • If you’re feeling unwell, please stay home.

  • Shower after class to keep yourself (and your training partners) fresh and healthy.

Do you offer kids’ classes?

While our main program is for adults, we offer kids’ classes through our partner, Rock Athletics.

Can teenagers attend classes?

Teenagers are welcome in our regular classes, provided they demonstrate an adult level of maturity (both mentally and physically). Since our training environment is primarily adult-oriented, we require parents to fully understand and consent to the nature of the setting before their teen participates.
